Scent detection training (Biosecurity risks, wildlife, narcotics, chemicals, cadavers etc) We specialise in the training of detector dogs for a wide range of odours / scent. The training includes:
The dogs can be used to conduct searches at the border, airports, cargo and freight facilities, containers, cruise ships or vehicles, and also to search for hazardous chemicals in buildings, for contaminated soil and for predators, etc. The dogs are temperament tested for their suitability prior to scent association training. The selected dogs must have a strongly developed play / ball or food drive as well as overall sound temperament and be confident around noise, people and strange objects. The dogs are trained in either a passive response (sitting, standing or laying down) or active / aggressive response (barking and biting, scratching or retrieving the item) depending on your operational needs and requirements. The training can be conducted either in New Zealand or overseas at your training site. All dogs selected and trained by us are certified. DETECTOR DOG AND DETECTOR DOG HANDLER TRAINING COURSE Minimum Duration: 13 weeks 3 week course preparation and scent association training The success rate of teams (dog and handler) is much higher if the dogs undergo the initial scent association training with an experienced trainer. This way it is much easier for the new and inexperienced handler to start working his / her new dog. 8 – 10 week handler training course The first 4 -5 weeks of training will be conducted at the training area / centre. Depending on the team’s progress, week 6 or 7 will be at the new work site (Airport, freight, cargo areas, wharf, etc) in order to acclimatize to the new environment. During the training course the handlers will receive extensive information and training on topics such as health and care of the dog, canine behaviour that include principals of conditioning and training techniques, canine related problem solving. After completing the training course a Validation Test will be conducted, followed by a graduation ceremony. (A detailed course programme will be provided on request) 2 week field installation of new detector dog teams at designated worksites Past experience has shown that a smooth transition from the familiar training environment to their new working environment is crucial for each new K9 team. This is a critical phase in detector dog training. It also enables the new dog handler to prevent later performance problems with his / her new dog. Consultancy for the development, management and operation of detector dog units / programmes for governments and private companies Rene Gloor has assisted several government agencies in setting up their own detector dog units/ programmes in Korea, Taiwan, Canada, and Hawaii as well as taking New Zealand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Detector Dog Programme from its infancy to one of the leading detector dog programmes in the world. The service includes
Search and Rescue Dog Training for Wilderness / Bush, Disaster and Cadaver searches We are able to train you and your dog in all aspects of search and rescue, up to operational level. The training can cover all areas (wilderness, disaster or avalanche) or one specific field only. The training involves an introduction to search training for the handler and the dog. Indications and search techniques for the dog can be done either by us or in conjunction with the handler / dog team training. The cadaver detector dogs are trained on pseudo scent as part of the initial scent association training. Professional protection and obedience training Obedience training should be part of any dog’s development. However it is critical that this is done in way so the dog makes a positive association to all commands learned, as well as with the person giving them and the environment the dog is living in. We will temperament test your dog prior to recommending a detailed training programme. The training can be done by us or by you under our guidance on a one on one basis. Protection training will be only offered to selected dogs and handlers approved by Rene Gloor. Your dog initially has to go through and pass temperament test. Applicants should not be offended if we decline any training with their dog, but in the final analysis this may be more cost effective and less stressful for the dog.
